Fed: Rock art site plans enrage Greens

The West Australian Greens say some of the world's finest rock art could be obliteratedunder a plan to house six gas processing plants at the site on the state's Burrup Peninsula.

The Burrup, on the north-west coast of the Pilbara region, is already the centre ofonshore processing facilities for the giant North West Shelf natural gas project.

It's also home to a massive cluster of ancient petroglyphs imprinted on cliffs andboulders -- which attracted a visit by Prince CHARLES in 1993.

The Greens say the rock art engravings date back to the ice age and warrant World Heritagelisting.

Greens MLC ROBIN CHAPPLE says the WA government wants to abandon the peninsula to industry, with six giant gas processing plants proposed and more on the drawing board.

Mr CHAPPLE -- a long-time campaigner against development on the Peninsula, 1500km northof Perth -- says the area must be preserved.

The Greens say the Burrup should be listed as a national park.
