MAC HONORS

Marshall quarterback Byron Leftwich, who completed 21-of-35 passattempts for 327 yards and four touchdowns in the Herd's 37-31victory over Bowling Green, was named the Offensive Player of theWeek in the Mid-American Conference.

Marshall redshirt freshman Roberto Terrell was named the MACEast's Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts againstBowling Green. Terrell had a 60-yard return in the first quarter toset up a game-tying touchdown.

PREP HONORS

Matewan running back Calvin Joplin was named The Associated Pressstate high school player of the week Monday after rushing for 336yards and five touchdowns - all in the first half - in a 56-6victory at Hurley (Va.) High.

Joplin carried the ball just 12 times, a whopping average of 28yards per carry. His TDs came on runs of 35, 22, 50, 75 and 81yards.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Joplin had rushed for more than 200yards in his four previous games.

Joplin left the game with 3:44 remaining in the first half.

HERD SOCCER

Marshall University's men's soccer team earned its first top-25ranking ever, landing at No. 23 in the latest National SoccerCoaches Association of America poll.

"This is a great honor for our team," said Herd Coach Bob Gray,whose club also is ranked No. 3 in the Great Lakes Region behindIndiana and Ohio State.

Marshall is off to an 8-1 start, the best in school history. TheHerd plays again Friday at 7 p.m. at Buffalo. On Sunday, Marshallplays Akron, last year's co-Mid-American Conference champs.

YOUTH SOCCER

* The West Virginia Thunder under-9 girls team won the BeckleyYMCA Fall Spectacular travel soccer tournament this past weekendwith a 4-0 record.

Team members were: Diane Bronikowski, Emma Busse, RachelChilders, Cristina Eddy, Taylor Erskine, Hana Glasser, Morgan Green,Amanda Johns, Mariel McGuiness, Taylor Morgan, Rachel Ross, CourtneySamms, Taylor Samms, Kate Schessler, Rachel Silverman, Jasmine Soo,Alexandra Thistlewaite, Victoria Thomas, Katy White and AllisonPitchford.

Coaches were Margaux Ratte and Greg Silverman.

* The West Virginia Goal Girls under-10 team won the premier GoldDivision this past weekend at the Fall Ball Classic in Cincinnati.The team, consisting of players from the Kanawha and Putnam countyareas, went 4-0.

Team members were: Karley Walker, Stephanie Wagner, SamanthaSnodgrass, Skye Smith, Lexie Puterbaugh, Anne Preston, RebeccaLogan, Morgan Holstine, Christy Helton, Sarah Hawley, Erin Clark,Katy Carte, Emily Bess, Abby Barber and Jade Smith.

* The Charleston-based University Soccer Club under-11 boys teamwon the Beckley YMCA Fall Spectacular this past weekend. The teamwent undefeated and did not allow a goal in capturing the 11-12division.

Team members were: Ryan Bailey, Charlie McElwee, Chase Vasale,Jake Stevens, Adam Younis, Kyle Snyder, Katlyn Snyder, RobertWillis, Kyle Maner, Sherrod Lacy, Ethan Kirk, Michael Washington,Jordan Randolph, Brandon Harper, Dustin Harper and Luca DiPiero. Thecoach was Nikola Stamenov.

* Winter leagues for children and adults are forming at theConley Soccer House in Teays Valley. The eight-week session costs$650 per team or $70 per person. For more information call 562-1020.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

The Hurricane Amateur Basketball League is conductingregistration for boys and girls, ages 3-8, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. todayat A&L Hardware. Tryouts are set for Oct. 13 at Hurricane MiddleSchool.

West Virginia University basketball Coach Gale Catlett will speakto the WVU Fan Club at 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Harding's Restaurant.

WVC HONORS

* Salem sophomore Vitor Brito and Concord junior Ben Chavolla arethe West Virginia Conference men's co-soccer players of the week.Wheeling Jesuit freshman Renae Moody is the WVC women's player ofthe week.

Brito scored four goals as Salem split a pair of league matches.Chavolla scored four goals and added three assists in a pair ofwins. And Moody scored twice in two Cardinal victories.

* Alderson-Broaddus sophomore setter Brandi Dicke is the WVCvolleyball player of the week. Dicke led the Battlers to two winswith 70 assists and 11 digs.

BASEBALL INSTRUCTION

Former Wayne High School standouts and current minor leaguepitchers Tim and Jon Adkins are offering instruction through theirBBL baseball school on the second floor of the Huntington Tri-StateIce Arena. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m. andSunday from 2 to 7 p.m. Slots are also available on Friday andSaturday by appointment.

KICKER HONORED

Former Winfield High School place-kicker Bobby Lemasters has beenname the Ohio Athletic Conference special teams player of the week.The Marietta College freshman was 4-for-4 on point-after attempts ina 31-28 win against Muskingum College last week. He also connectedon a 27-yard field goal.

After four games, he is 11-for-11 on point-after attempts and 4-for-5 on field goal attempts. His longest field goal this season isa 37-yarder against John Carroll University.
