The influx of an estimated 30,000 horse racing fans during August keeps church attendance high during what is a slow period for most communities. But the season is not usually a financial boon to Saratoga's congregations.
Most of the visiting worshipers don't give more than a couple of dollars each because, as the Rev. Thomas Vail of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church on Broadway said, "They have their own parishes to support."
