Vic: Thousands expected in Melbourne for Palm Sunday rally
MELBOURNE, April 13 AAP - Thousands of people are expected to attend a Palm Sundaypeace rally and service in Melbourne today.
The rally against the war in Iraq takes place at the Treasury Gardens in Spring Streetfrom 2pm (AEST).
An ecumenical church service will also start at 2pm (AEST) in Federation Square.
The two events, jointly organised by the Victorian Peace Network and the VictorianCouncil of Churches, will then join together for a march though the city streets.
The council's Maureen Postma said the anti-war protests have made people aware of thesuffering of the Iraqi people.
"I think there's actually a groundswell here within the community that we probablyhaven't experienced for quite a long time," she said.
"Rallying for peace on Palm Sunday gives us a chance to express our long-term commitmentto support the people of Iraq, and to work for peace and justice in all countries of theworld."
A Victorian Peace Network spokesman said they expected several thousand people to takepart in both events.
Police are warning motorists that traffic disruptions may be encountered in centralMelbourne as a result of the events.
A spokesman said motorists should avoid the inner city or use public transport.
